The Federal Government has commenced the reconstruction of two strategic highways in Borno State with the launch of a ₦137 billion road infrastructure project aimed at restoring economic activities, reopening regional trade routes, and strengthening security across the North-East.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the flag-off ceremony, said the rehabilitation of the Bama–Banki and Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala roads underscores the administration’s commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure in communities affected by years of insurgency.

According to him, the road projects will improve connectivity, ease the movement of goods and people, and enhance the operational capacity of security agencies while reviving cross-border trade with neighbouring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.

Minister of Works David Umahi said the Bama–Banki Road project is valued at more than ₦70 billion, while the first phase of the Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala Road will cost about ₦67 billion. He added that the roads would be constructed using reinforced concrete pavement and equipped with bridges, drainage systems, and other modern infrastructure designed to ensure long-term durability.

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum described the projects as a significant step toward the state’s economic recovery, noting that improved road infrastructure would enhance access to markets, encourage investment, and support the livelihoods of residents.

Also speaking, President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said the projects, being executed under the Federal Government’s Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme, would strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

The government expressed confidence that the rehabilitation of the two highways would accelerate post-insurgency reconstruction efforts and reinforce Borno State’s position as a key gateway for trade within the Lake Chad region. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
