
Senior army chiefs from across Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation to address the continent’s growing security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency and transnational crime.
The commitment was made during the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Port Harcourt, where military leaders and defence stakeholders met to discuss strategies for enhancing peace, stability and collective security across Africa.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the complex nature of today’s security threats requires stronger collaboration among African nations. He stressed the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, joint military exercises, professional exchanges and coordinated operations to effectively combat cross-border threats.
Shaibu noted that the inclusion of the African Land Forces Forum in NADCEL 2026 provides a strategic platform for strengthening defence partnerships while promoting cooperation among African armed forces. He added that sustained collaboration is essential to improving regional security and fostering lasting peace on the continent.
