The House of Representatives has withdrawn its version of the proposed constitutional amendment on the establishment of state police and adopted the Executive’s bill for legislative consideration.

During plenary, lawmakers passed the Executive-sponsored State Police Bill through its first and second readings before referring it to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative action.

The move is aimed at streamlining the legislative process by considering a single proposal on the establishment of state police as part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing and internal security architecture.

The Executive bill seeks to amend the Constitution to provide the legal framework for the creation and operation of state police across the country.

The House Committee on Constitution Review is expected to scrutinise the bill and conduct further consultations before presenting its recommendations to the House for consideration.
