In a recent interview, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga defended President Bola Tinubu against social media portrayals that depict him as indifferent to the struggles of Nigerians. Onanuga asserted that the President is acutely aware of the difficulties citizens are facing and is committed to improving their situation.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga addressed the derogatory nickname “T-pain” that some social media users have attributed to Tinubu, emphasizing that such labels are misguided. “The President is not T-pain; he has come to repair the economy, not inflict pain on Nigerians,” he stated.

Onanuga acknowledged the hardships stemming from rising inflation and increased energy prices, which have left many citizens struggling. He reassured Nigerians that Tinubu feels their pain and is dedicated to providing relief. “He has never shied away from telling Nigerians that he feels their pain and is working very hard to make sure that he gives them some relief so that things will get better,” he said.

Despite the prevailing economic challenges, including significant food inflation and soaring energy costs attributed to the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, Onanuga pointed out that the economy is still experiencing growth. “We are experiencing economic growth, despite inflation; revenues have increased,” he claimed.

Many Nigerians have expressed their frustrations through protests, calling for a reversal of the administration’s economic policies, which they argue have exacerbated their financial struggles. However, the Tinubu administration has maintained that its reforms are necessary for long-term economic stability and will not be reversed.

Onanuga reiterated that the administration is focused on achieving better days for the country, assuring citizens that improvement is on the horizon. “Better days are nearer than before,” he concluded, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and patient as the government works through these challenges.
