The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied recent reports alleging that Nigerians in Libya are facing harassment or arrest due to tensions related to a recent Confederation of African Football (CAF) decision. The CAF had sanctioned the Libyan Football Federation following the mistreatment of the Nigerian national team and its officials during a Nations Cup qualifying match in Libya. However, the ministry clarified that these football-related issues have not led to any backlash against Nigerian citizens residing in Libya.

In a statement issued by Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry emphasized that Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily lives without interference from local authorities. “Contrary to recent publications, particularly in the Punch newspaper on November 3, 2024, there is no basis for concern. Nigerians in Libya are not facing harassment from Libyan authorities,” Abu-Obe stated.

The ministry’s statement also reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens globally. “Safeguarding the well-being of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority for the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Abu-Obe added, underscoring the government’s vigilance in ensuring the safety of its nationals wherever they may be.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraged Nigerians to verify information through official government channels and avoid speculation that could inflame unnecessary tension.
