Senators from Nigeria’s Northern region have praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the release of minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests, describing it as a commendable step towards safeguarding the rights of Nigerian youth. The Northern Senators Forum, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, expressed gratitude to Tinubu for his swift response to the issue, which has sparked significant public concern.
“This directive reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigeria’s youth,” the statement read. Tinubu’s order to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to expedite the release of these minors was lauded as a positive step, showing the administration’s responsiveness to the youth’s needs.
Senator Yar’adua also commended leaders from the North who have championed the cause of these detained minors. “Their dedication and advocacy have been instrumental in bringing this matter to the forefront, and we are grateful for their commitment to the welfare of our young people,” he noted.
As a way forward, Yar’adua urged Northern leaders to prioritize creating safe and supportive environments for young people, emphasizing the need to focus on education, protection, and empowerment. “Let us work together to ensure that our youth receive the support and resources they need to become active contributors to Nigeria’s growth and development,” he added.
President Tinubu’s directive followed widespread public outrage over the arrests, which occurred during the #EndBadGovernance protests held across Nigeria in August. The President’s response has been viewed as a step toward addressing the concerns of the nation’s younger generation, as well as setting a precedent for youth-focused leadership in Nigeria.
