The government of Equatorial Guinea has begun an investigation into leaked pornographic videos allegedly featuring high-ranking civil servant Baltasar Engonga, who is seen engaging in sexual acts with multiple women, including the wives of prominent officials. The scandal emerged during a fraud investigation involving Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency. During a search of his home and office, authorities reportedly discovered over 400 tapes documenting these encounters.
In response to the scandal, the government has announced the installation of surveillance cameras in courts and ministries to prevent “indecent and illicit acts” and ordered the suspension of officials implicated. Vice President Teodoro Mangue emphasized that any official found engaging in such activities at work would face disciplinary action, as it constitutes a “flagrant violation of the code of conduct.”
The government’s recent decisions follow the widespread circulation of the videos, which officials say have “tarnished the country’s image.” A statement from the Press and Information Office noted that these measures include suspending officials involved in the tapes, enforcing stricter surveillance protocols in judicial offices, and ensuring higher accountability for officials tasked with monitoring security.
In response to the scandal, the Vice President has urgently summoned senior judicial and government officials, including the President of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Attorney General, to devise strategies and preventive measures to address the issue.
The leaked videos, which quickly went viral, are said to include encounters with high-profile individuals, reportedly involving relatives and spouses of influential figures in the country, such as the sister of the President and the wives of about 20 ministers. The revelations have sparked widespread discussion on social media and are considered one of the most significant scandals in Equatorial Guinea and possibly across Africa.
