Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Nigeria today for a historic visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. Upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, along with senior government officials and diplomats.
This visit marks the first official trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in over a decade and underscores India’s growing commitment to fostering stronger ties with Africa’s largest economy.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to engage in high-level discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on trade, investment, energy cooperation, and technology partnerships. India, a major importer of Nigerian crude oil, is keen to expand its role in Nigeria’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
Speaking at the airport, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike expressed optimism about the visit, calling it “a significant step towards deepening the longstanding friendship between our two nations.”

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to meet with the Indian diaspora in Nigeria, a vibrant community that plays a pivotal role in the economic and cultural exchange between the two countries.
With Nigeria being India’s largest trading partner in Africa, bilateral trade reached $14.95 billion in 2023. Both nations aim to further diversify their relationship beyond oil, exploring opportunities in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and digital technology.
This visit is expected to culminate in the signing of key agreements that will set the stage for a new era of collaboration between India and Nigeria.
