France and England will face off in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, with both European heavyweights aiming to end their campaigns on a winning note.

The match offers more than just a bronze medal, as both teams seek to restore pride after falling short in the semi-finals.

France head into the encounter with the stronger defensive record, having scored 16 goals and conceded only four in seven matches while keeping four clean sheets. Didier Deschamps’ side has also dominated possession for much of the tournament, averaging 57.1 per cent possession and producing 120 shots.

England have also impressed offensively, scoring 14 goals from seven matches, but arrive after a run of four consecutive games without a clean sheet. Gareth Southgate’s side has averaged 54.1 per cent possession and created 99 shots during the tournament.

Recent statistics suggest an entertaining contest. Both teams have scored in four of England’s last five matches, while France have opened the scoring in nine of their last 10 games. Disciplinary records also indicate a controlled contest, with both sides regularly finishing matches with fewer than five yellow cards.

Historically, France hold a slight advantage, winning four of the previous nine meetings compared to England’s three victories, with two draws. Their most recent World Cup clash came in the 2022 quarter-finals, when France secured a 2-1 victory.

Both coaches are expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation.

France are likely to rely on captain Kylian Mbappé, who has been one of the tournament’s standout performers with eight goals and three assists. England’s hopes will largely rest on Jude Bellingham, whose six goals and influential midfield displays have been central to their World Cup campaign.

The French squad will be without injured defender William Saliba and goalkeeper Brice Samba, while England are missing experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson.

France appear to hold a slight statistical advantage, particularly in shot volume, defensive solidity and fast-break efficiency. However, England’s strength in aerial deliveries, work rate and attacking partnership between Harry Kane and Bellingham could prove decisive.

With both nations determined to leave the tournament on a positive note, the battle for third place is expected to be a closely contested affair before the 2026 World Cup concludes with Sunday’s final. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
