FIFA has unveiled a new initiative that will see FIFA World Cup champions receive championship rings, introducing a tradition widely associated with American sports to international football.
The championship rings will be awarded in addition to the World Cup trophy and gold medals presented to the winning team.
FIFA said the design will feature the World Cup trophy on one side, while the other side will showcase the identity of the victorious national team.
The winning team’s captain and head coach will receive temporary rings immediately after the final, with customised rings later produced for 30 members of the champion squad.
FIFA also announced that 1,996 commemorative rings will be made available for sale worldwide, bringing the total number of rings to 2,026 in honour of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Describing the rings as a “new symbol of triumph,” FIFA said the initiative brings one of the most recognisable traditions in American sports to the world’s biggest football tournament.
The announcement comes ahead of Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, where the winners will become the first team in history to receive the newly introduced championship rings alongside football’s most prestigious trophy. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
