The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced via its X (formerly Twitter) handle that its operations will be closed on Thursday, January 9, in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.

The 39th President of the United States passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Serving a single term from 1977 to 1981, Carter was widely admired for his post-presidential humanitarian work, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, in honor of former President Carter’s passing. We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights,” the mission stated.

Carter’s remains were transported to the U.S. Capitol in a solemn military ceremony on Tuesday, where they will lie in state until a national funeral later this week. The flag-draped casket was carried on a gun carriage through Washington, retracing the path of his inauguration parade.

A live broadcast captured members of the public paying their respects in the Capitol’s rotunda, many pausing for moments of silence. The procession, which began in Carter’s home state of Georgia, honored his service as a U.S. Navy submariner and his dedication to the nation.
