The family of Barrister Ahmed Mohammed, the kidnapped Permanent Commissioner of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), says his abductors are demanding an additional N260 million ransom months after receiving an initial N40 million payment.
His wife, Hajiya Rahmat Ahmed, told Daily Trust that the family raised the first ransom through contributions from friends, relatives, colleagues and her husband’s personal savings. She said the kidnappers refused to accept the money until it was converted to US dollars before it was eventually paid in December 2025.
Despite receiving the payment, the kidnappers have continued to hold Mohammed in captivity and have issued a fresh demand of N260 million.
Ahmed was abducted on September 29, 2025, along the New Bussa–Mokwa Road while travelling from New Bussa to Minna.
Rahmat said the prolonged ordeal has left the family in severe financial and emotional distress, affecting the education and welfare of their children and other dependants under the commissioner’s care.
She also revealed that her husband has complained of deteriorating health during recent phone conversations and that the kidnappers have threatened to kill him if the latest ransom demand is not met.
The family appealed to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to intervene, saying they have exhausted all available means to secure his release and can no longer cope with the burden of his continued captivity. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
