President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated the importance of unity as the foundation for Nigeria’s progress, urging leaders to draw inspiration from the natural confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers in Lokoja, Kogi State. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inaugural Kogi Dialogue on Monday, an event commemorating Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s first year in office, the President highlighted the symbolism of the rivers’ merger as a metaphor for national cohesion and collective strength.
“The convergence of these rivers is not just a geographical event; it is a divine lesson in strength and continuity. It symbolizes the power of unity—where individual streams combine to create a force capable of shaping destinies and carving paths,” President Tinubu said.
He urged Nigerians to see unity as the only formula that works, emphasizing that divisions only serve self-serving interests. “Just as water merging with water becomes stronger, so must we as leaders and citizens merge our efforts to build a united and prosperous Nigeria,” he added.
Call for Dialogue and Leadership Amid Challenges
President Tinubu commended Governor Ododo for initiating the Kogi Dialogue, describing it as a “critical step toward fostering reconciliation and progress.” He called on leaders at all levels to prioritize dialogue as a tool for resolving differences and promoting national cohesion.
“Dialogue is not just an opportunity to air grievances. It is the true path to justice, reconciliation, and understanding. Without dialogue, history will pass us by, leaving us abandoned by time and forgotten by progress,” the President stated.
Acknowledging the economic and security challenges facing the nation, he stressed that true leadership is tested in difficult times. He called on citizens and leaders alike to view themselves as “threads in the intricate fabric of progress” and to put national welfare above personal ambition.
Governor Ododo Reflects on Achievements and Vision
In his remarks, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the people of Kogi State for their unwavering support. He outlined his administration’s achievements, including improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Initiatives such as free basic education and bursaries for tertiary students were highlighted as part of efforts to recalibrate the state’s socio-economic fortunes.
“Kogi is blessed with rich human and natural resources. It is time to harness these assets for the prosperity and transformation of our state,” Governor Ododo said, urging indigenes to put the state’s interests first.

Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), commended the collaborative relationship between Governor Ododo and his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, citing it as a model for development and political stability. Former Governor Bello also lauded the current administration’s direction, describing it as aligned with the vision of Kogi’s founding fathers.

The event culminated in the commissioning of key road projects by Vice President Shettima, signifying the Ododo administration’s commitment to infrastructure development.
