A former U.S. Capitol rioter who was recently pardoned by former President Donald Trump was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop in Indiana, officials have confirmed.

The man, identified as Matthew Huttle, 42, was killed on Sunday after allegedly resisting arrest during the stop. According to state police, an altercation between Huttle and a sheriff’s deputy led to the officer firing his weapon. Huttle was reportedly armed at the time of the incident.

Huttle was among the individuals charged for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack and was pardoned by Trump shortly after the former president took office last week. The pardons, which included individuals convicted of violent acts during the riot, sparked criticism from Democrats and some Republicans.

Huttle previously served a six-month prison sentence for his role in the Capitol riot and had been released last July. His uncle, who also participated in the attack, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for assaulting officers.

This incident follows reports of another Trump pardon recipient, Daniel Ball, who was rearrested last week on a preexisting federal gun charge.
