President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the substantive Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) for an initial four-year term, effective January 23, 2025.
Aliyu, who has been serving as the acting Managing Director since March 2024, brings over 20 years of experience in energy and organizational development, spanning both the private and public sectors. He has held key leadership positions in Nigeria’s power, water resources, and transportation sectors.
Before his appointment, Aliyu played a crucial role in Nigeria’s power sector reforms, serving as the Head of the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project, and previously holding positions as General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research and Deputy General Manager at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aliyu’s expertise and leadership will drive the REA’s mission of expanding reliable electricity access to rural communities. The appointment aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda on sustainable energy and power sector transformation.
With Aliyu at the helm, the REA is expected to intensify efforts toward rural electrification projects, ensuring inclusive energy access and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
