OpenAI has reached an agreement to acquire Windsurf, an AI-powered coding tool formerly known as Codeium, for approximately $3 billion, according to a report by Bloomberg News citing sources familiar with the matter.
The deal, which has not yet been finalized, would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date and is expected to significantly enhance the coding capabilities of its flagship product, ChatGPT.
Windsurf had recently been in talks with prominent investors — including General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins — to raise capital at a $3 billion valuation. The company was previously valued at $1.25 billion following a $150 million funding round led by General Catalyst in August. Other backers include Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks.
The potential acquisition comes amid intensifying competition in the AI-assisted coding space, as OpenAI continues to expand the functionality of ChatGPT with each model release. Integrating Windsurf’s tools would further strengthen its position against rivals in the fast-growing AI developer tools market.
