President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia have agreed to establish formal diplomatic ties, marking a major step in strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations. The announcement came during President Tinubu’s historic State Visit to the Caribbean nation.

The two leaders emphasized shared cultural and historical ties and committed to deepening cooperation in trade, tourism, education, and cultural exchange. President Tinubu described the relationship as a “bridge between Africa and the Caribbean,” while pledging Nigeria’s support for small island states on global issues such as climate change and development financing.

Prime Minister Pierre expressed optimism about future collaboration and praised Nigeria’s educational legacy, highlighting plans to partner in areas like agriculture, infrastructure, and the creative industries. He recalled Saint Lucia’s historic contribution to Nigeria’s development through the service of Sir Darnley Alexander, a former Nigerian Chief Justice.

President Tinubu also met with Governor-General Cyril Charles, where both leaders discussed Commonwealth cooperation and opportunities for expanded economic engagement.
