The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has said that many Nigerians who relocated abroad in search of better opportunities are facing tougher living conditions than commonly perceived.
Speaking during a television programme, Bwala argued that the high cost of living in countries such as the United Kingdom consumes a significant portion of migrants’ earnings, leaving many with little disposable income after paying for rent, utilities, transportation and other necessities.
According to him, some Nigerians abroad are compelled to take on multiple jobs to meet their financial obligations despite earning what may appear to be higher salaries.
Bwala also noted that many highly educated Nigerians who migrate often end up in jobs that do not reflect their qualifications, describing the situation as a major challenge for many migrants.
While acknowledging that countries abroad offer better infrastructure, healthcare and social services, he maintained that the economic realities facing many Nigerians overseas are often overlooked.
His remarks came amid ongoing discussions about the growing “Japa” trend and concerns over the increasing number of Nigerians seeking opportunities outside the country.
