Former President Muhammadu Buhari has been hospitalised in London since April 2025 after what was initially described as a routine medical check-up reportedly turned more serious, resulting in his admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) for several days.

According to reports, Buhari, who is now 82 years old, has since stabilised and is recovering under the supervision of medical professionals. His long-time media aide, Garba Shehu, confirmed the development and noted that the former president is “doing well in his recovery,” while also calling for prayers from the public for his full recuperation.

Although the specific nature of his illness and the name of the hospital have not been officially disclosed, sources close to the family indicated that Buhari’s current health condition required intensive observation and care. This has stirred memories of his frequent overseas medical visits during his time in office.

President Buhari served two terms in office, stepping down on May 29, 2023. Since leaving office, he has largely stayed out of the public eye, residing in his hometown of Daura before travelling to the United Kingdom for medical attention.

His current condition has once again sparked conversations around elite medical tourism and the need for improved healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria.
