Ondo Doctors Declare Three-Day Warning Strike Over Poor Welfare, Health Sector Neglect

Medical doctors in Ondo State under the National Association of Government General and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) have announced a three-day warning strike beginning Monday, July 14, 2025. The decision follows what the group described as continued neglect of the health sector and the welfare of government-employed medical professionals by the state government.

In a statement signed by NAGGMDP State Chairman, Dr. Richard Obe, and Secretary, Dr. Adekunle Owolabi, the doctors decried a critical shortage of medical personnel, with some general hospitals operating with only one doctor per entire local government area. They also condemned a sudden hike in taxation since April 2025, non-payment of salaries to eight doctors employed in October 2024, and unpaid hazard allowances dating back to late 2023.

Other grievances include outstanding promotion arrears, salary shortfalls, and various unpaid statutory allowances. The association has demanded immediate recruitment of more doctors, full settlement of all owed benefits, a reversal of the new tax regime, and the resolution of all promotion-related arrears.

NAGGMDP warned that failure to address these issues during the warning strike would trigger an indefinite industrial action, potentially crippling the already strained health system in the state. While affirming their commitment to quality healthcare delivery, the doctors insisted they could no longer work under what they called “inhumane and demoralising conditions.” They noted that the government had failed to act on a 14-working-day ultimatum that expired on July 1, 2025.
