The remains of the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, have been laid to rest at his private residence in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, bringing a profound chapter in Nigeria’s traditional history to a close. The revered monarch, who passed away at 91, was buried on Monday amid national mourning, just a day after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Janazah (Islamic burial prayer), led by the Chief Imam of Ijebuland, Miftaudeen Gbadegesin Ayanbadejo, drew hundreds of mourners including traditional rulers, political leaders, and notable dignitaries. Markets across Ijebu-Ode were closed in honour of the late king, as directed by the local government chairman, Dare Alebiosu, allowing residents to pay their final respects to a monarch who reigned for 65 years.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Ministers Adegboyega Oyetola and Bosun Tijani, joined Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, businessman Aliko Dangote, and others in celebrating a life defined by service and courage. Governor Abiodun hailed the Awujale as “a dependable father and a selfless leader,” recalling the monarch’s unwavering support during political storms.

Tributes poured in highlighting Oba Adetona’s fearless leadership, integrity, and his relentless call for the creation of Ijebu State — a dream yet to be realised. Dangote described the late ruler as a man of “sharp intellect and enduring influence,” whose legacy extends far beyond the borders of Ijebuland.

Born in 1934 and crowned at just 26, Oba Adetona redefined traditional leadership for the modern era. From hosting presidents to advocating religious freedom in royal burials, he left behind a legacy of progressive monarchism and cultural unity. His passing, though mourned, seals his place in Nigerian history as one of its most iconic and principled traditional rulers.
