Croatia captain Luka Modric has officially signed a one-year contract with AC Milan at the age of 39, the Italian club confirmed on Monday.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner joins the Rossoneri from Real Madrid, with Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri having hinted last week that Modric would make the move after the Club World Cup. The veteran midfielder, who turns 40 in September, had been linked with a switch to Italy since early June following the announcement of his departure from Madrid after 12 illustrious years.
“AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026, with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027,” the 19-time Serie A champions said in an official statement.
Modric underwent medical tests in Milan earlier on Monday. According to local media reports, he is expected to begin training with his new teammates in August.
“I’m very happy to be here and to start a new chapter in my career,” Modric said in a video message shared on the club’s social media. “A big hug to everyone.”
Allegri, who returned to AC Milan this summer after previously guiding the club to the Serie A title in 2011, will be hoping Modric’s arrival adds valuable experience to the squad. Milan’s first competitive fixture of the new season is scheduled for August 17 in the Italian Cup.
