Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Anas al-Sharif, 28, has been killed alongside three colleagues in what Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital director described as a targeted Israeli attack. The journalists were inside a tent for media workers outside the hospital’s main gate when it was struck on Sunday. Al-Sharif was widely known for his reporting from northern Gaza.

The victims also included fellow correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal. Israel’s military claimed al-Sharif led a Hamas cell involved in rocket attacks, allegations Al Jazeera has strongly rejected, accusing the Israeli army of running an incitement campaign against its reporters. Rights groups say such accusations are part of a broader effort to discredit Palestinian journalists documenting the war.

Since Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in October 2023, more than 200 journalists and media workers have been killed, according to rights monitors, including several Al Jazeera staff and their relatives. The Committee to Protect Journalists previously warned that al-Sharif was being “targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign” before his death.
