Lagos State has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to install solar power systems across key educational institutions. The agreement was announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024) in Beijing, where President Bola Tinubu led the Nigerian delegation on a state visit to China.
The project is designed to generate approximately 50 megawatts (MW) of clean, affordable electricity for institutions such as Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this initiative would significantly reduce the institutions’ reliance on grid electricity and fossil fuels, contributing to environmental sustainability.
“The MoU underscores our commitment to integrating sustainable energy solutions into Lagos State’s economic development strategy,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who witnessed the signing, echoed the governor’s sentiments, stressing the importance of such collaborations in Nigeria’s energy transition. He noted that the project aligns with Lagos State’s vision of leading in renewable energy adoption, enhancing energy security, and reducing the state’s carbon footprint.
This development marks a critical milestone in Lagos State’s efforts to incorporate green energy into its infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a leader in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
