India Boosts Weather Forecasting to Power Renewable Growth

India is upgrading its weather forecasting systems to support its fast-growing renewable energy sector.

With solar and wind capacity surging 22 GW added in the first half of 2025 alone authorities say highly localized forecasts are crucial to balance the grid. Current state-level predictions are too broad, and planners now require cloud-level tracking that aligns with the grid’s 15-minute cycles.

The government is investing in both short-term precision forecasts and long-term climate tools, a step that could give India a global edge in energy-linked meteorology. It is also moving from five-year to annual energy plans for greater flexibility.

Accurate forecasts, officials say, will be as vital as turbines and panels in ensuring reliable clean power.
