Vietnam is bracing for Typhoon Kajiki, the year’s strongest storm, expected to hit the central coast on Monday with winds of up to 166 kph (103 mph).
The storm, currently about 110 km offshore, is forecast to make landfall between Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces, bringing heavy rain, flooding, and landslides.
Authorities have begun mass evacuations of over 500,000 people, with 16,500 soldiers and 107,000 paramilitary personnel deployed. Two airports have shut, dozens of flights were canceled, and all fishing boats ordered ashore.
Kajiki has already battered China’s Hainan island, forcing 20,000 evacuations and shutting down businesses and transport in Sanya after torrential rains.
Officials warn Kajiki could rival Typhoon Yagi in 2024, which killed nearly 300 people in Vietnam.
