Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak in a deal worth £125 million, setting a new British transfer record.

Sources confirmed on Sunday that both clubs finalized terms, paving the way for the 25-year-old forward to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract with the Anfield side. The deal closes a lengthy transfer saga that has dominated headlines throughout the summer window.

Liverpool initially saw a £110 million bid rejected in August but persisted in their pursuit of Isak, who emerged as the club’s top target. His arrival comes just weeks after the Reds shattered their own transfer record with the £100 million signing of German playmaker Florian Wirtz, plus £16 million in potential add-ons.

The addition of Isak is expected to push Liverpool’s summer spending beyond £416 million, excluding performance-related bonuses. That figure also includes the signings of Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni. Liverpool remain in negotiations for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as the window edges toward closure.

Player sales have softened the financial hit, with the departures of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton and Ben Doak generating an estimated £190 million in fees.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £60 million in 2022 and quickly became a key figure at St. James’ Park. Last season, he scored 27 goals across all competitions, firing the Magpies to a Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool and securing Champions League qualification with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

Tensions between player and club surfaced earlier this summer when Isak was omitted from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with what the club called a minor thigh injury. He later trained separately in Spain and released a statement accusing the Magpies of breaking promises, declaring the “relationship can’t continue.” Newcastle denied any assurances had been made but eventually sanctioned the transfer after leaving him out of their opening league fixtures, including a 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool.

The Isak move is the latest headline in a record-breaking transfer window, underscoring Liverpool’s intent to rebuild aggressively under new leadership. For Newcastle, the sale follows the £65 million signing of Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, a move seen as a contingency for Isak’s exit.

If completed, the transfer will mark one of the most significant Premier League deals in history — both in cost and competitive implications.
