Rising Farm Costs Threaten Food Security, North-East Governors Warn

Governors from Nigeria’s North-East have warned that the sharp rise in the cost of farm inputs such as fertilizer and seeds could trigger a food crisis in 2026 if urgent action is not taken.

The leaders, under the North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF), met in Jalingo and urged the Federal Government and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to expand subsidies and support dry-season farming.

They also raised concerns over predicted floods in the region, calling for community sensitization and urgent rebuilding of damaged infrastructure.

On development plans, the governors directed the creation of a solar-focused energy masterplan and announced that the North-East Trade Fair will hold in Maiduguri this December. They further pledged support for the University of Maiduguri’s 50th anniversary and its Endowment Fund.
