President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has commenced the nationwide distribution of health commodities valued at ₦2.9 billion to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths across the country.
The commodities include delivery kits, antenatal medicines and supplements, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, family planning materials, and other essential drugs for mothers and newborns. Alongside the supplies, the initiative focuses on strengthening the health system through the upgrading of primary healthcare centres and the training of health workers for more effective service delivery.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with development partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. WHO will also provide annual data tracking to monitor progress and guide future improvements.
The Federal Government has called on state governments to complement this intervention to ensure sustainability. The initiative represents a significant step towards protecting the lives of women and children while expanding access to healthcare services nationwide.
