The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, have announced a new initiative to secure sustainable financing for Nigeria’s diplomatic missions. The move is aimed at strengthening the country’s foreign policy objectives, boosting global engagement, and ensuring that national interests are effectively protected.
At a high-level meeting in Abuja, both ministers aligned on funding priorities for the 2025 budget and laid the groundwork for a more robust financial framework in 2026. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions were focused on ensuring that Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities are fully reflected in upcoming budgetary allocations, thereby addressing long-standing challenges of underfunding in the diplomatic sector.
Officials said the initiative is expected to empower Nigerian diplomats with the necessary resources to effectively represent the nation abroad, safeguard the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, and amplify Nigeria’s voice in global affairs. By ensuring predictable and adequate financing, the Federal Government is reinforcing its commitment to a stronger and more impactful foreign service.
