Spain has just experienced its hottest summer on record, the state weather agency AEMET announced on Monday.
Between June and August 2025, the country’s average temperature reached 24.2 °C, surpassing the previous record of 24.1 °C set in 2022. That figure was 2.1 °C above the long-term seasonal average for 1991–2020, highlighting the intensifying effects of climate change.
The season brought 33 official heatwave days nationwide, with one in August stretching for 16 consecutive days. Temperatures in parts of southern Spain climbed above 45 °C, straining public health systems and energy supply.
The extreme conditions also fueled the country’s worst wildfire season in three decades, leaving thousands of hectares scorched.
AEMET noted that nine of Spain’s ten hottest summers have occurred since 2001, warning that this summer may offer a glimpse of the climate reality mid-century if global warming continues unchecked.
