In a renewed effort to strengthen food security and promote agricultural productivity, the Federal Government has empowered 25 maize farmers in Edo State with critical farming inputs and support under its ongoing Agricultural Transformation Agenda.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Edo State Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), included the distribution of improved maize seeds, agrochemicals, and technical guidance aimed at enhancing yield and ensuring sustainability in maize production.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Benin City, a representative from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized the importance of maize as a staple crop in Nigeria’s food system. He noted that the intervention aligns with the government’s broader objective of reducing food imports and supporting local farmers to scale up production.

“We are committed to empowering smallholder farmers with the resources they need to thrive. By equipping these 25 maize farmers today, we are not only investing in their individual livelihoods but also in the food security of the nation,” the official stated.

The State Coordinator of the Edo ADP, Mrs. Omowumi Adeyemi, praised the federal government’s commitment to rural agricultural development, noting that the selected beneficiaries were drawn from various local government areas based on clear criteria, including farm size, commitment, and potential for impact.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Samuel Igbinedion from Ovia North-East LGA, expressed gratitude for the support, saying it would greatly reduce the financial burden on farmers as they prepare for the next planting season.

“This is a timely intervention. With the rising cost of inputs, many of us were struggling. Now, I can confidently return to my farm and expect a better harvest,” he said.

The empowerment program is part of a broader federal initiative targeting thousands of smallholder farmers across Nigeria to combat rising food prices and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
