The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has declared its intention to press on with its nationwide strike against Dangote Refinery, despite a restraining order issued by the National Industrial Court. The union insists that the industrial action is necessary to protest the recent dismissal of hundreds of workers, which it has described as unlawful and a direct attack on labour rights.
PENGASSAN members have already staged demonstrations at key energy sector offices, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), disrupting normal operations. The strike has drawn widespread attention due to its potential impact on the petroleum industry and the broader economy.
Union leaders maintain that the court order will not deter their demands, which include the reversal of all dismissals and assurances that such actions will not be repeated. With negotiations still ongoing under the watch of the Federal Government, the standoff between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery appears set to deepen in the coming days.
