Slot Plays Down Liverpool’s Reported Interest in Osimhen

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has clarified that Victor Osimhen was never a serious transfer target for the club, despite widespread speculation linking the Nigerian striker with a move to Anfield.

The Reds opted to strengthen their attack this summer by signing Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, following a dip in form from Darwin Núñez. While Osimhen was heavily linked with several Premier League clubs — including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United — Slot insists Liverpool’s focus was always elsewhere.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Galatasaray, Slot said:

“Because of the enormous tragedy with Diogo Jota, we had to bring in two number nines. From the start, it was clear to us that we wanted Ekitike and Isak if we needed to strengthen. We’re always looking at very good players, but Osimhen was not in our plans.”

Osimhen, who rejoined Galatasaray permanently after a prolific loan spell last season, has scored 39 goals in 45 appearances for the Turkish champions. He remains their biggest threat going into Tuesday night’s showdown at Rams Park.

However, Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has hinted that the 26-year-old may not be fully fit after only featuring briefly in their weekend win over Alanyaspor. While Osimhen is expected to play some role against Liverpool, a full 90 minutes appears unlikely.
