ADC Denies Zoning Agreement, Faults Obidients’ Criticism

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed claims that it has reached any agreement on zoning its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, said yesterday that no decision had been taken on zoning, describing as misleading the comments credited to Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement, who accused the ADC of breaking promises.

Abdullahi clarified that the ADC had not made any commitments to coalition partners regarding zoning, stressing: “You cannot break any promise you have not made.” He decried Tanko’s remarks as divisive and destabilising, questioning whether Tanko had consulted with Peter Obi before issuing the statement.

The ADC spokesman insisted that zoning had not been discussed by the party’s leaders and that Tanko, who he said is not a stakeholder in the coalition, spoke beyond his competence. “Tanko’s view does not reflect Peter Obi’s position,” Abdullahi added.

The Obidient Movement, a group supporting the presidential ambition of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, had earlier urged the ADC to zone its presidential ticket to the South in the interest of fairness and inclusivity.

Meanwhile, the ADC recently directed its key figures to fully commit to the party by resigning from other political platforms. The caucus meeting where the decision was taken was attended by prominent leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, though Obi was absent.
