President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the Nigeria Climate Adaptation, Erosion, and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), a €175 million initiative in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project targets severe erosion, flooding, and land degradation affecting 23 states across Nigeria.
The initiative aims to protect vulnerable communities, restore farmlands, and enhance climate resilience through sustainable land and water management practices. It builds upon the successes of the previous World Bank-assisted NEWMAP-IDA project, which ran from 2013 to 2022.
At the launch in Abuja, Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal confirmed that the project is now “disbursement-effective,” following the fulfillment of all necessary conditions. This collaboration highlights Nigeria’s commitment to combating climate change and its impacts, with strong support from international partners like the European Investment Bank.
