The Federal Government has announced the immediate commencement of upgrades to the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State. This was revealed in a press statement issued on Thursday by Funmi Imuetinyan, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
The statement highlighted that the upgrade aims to address the ongoing issues caused by the dam’s overflow and provide a permanent solution to the recurring flood disasters in the region. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, made the commitment during a visit to Maiduguri alongside the Minister of State, Bello Goronyo.
Accompanied by technical directors, water experts, agency heads, and senior officials, the ministerial team conducted an extensive assessment of the recent floods, which displaced residents, submerged homes and farmlands, and disrupted local economies. Utsev reassured the public that experts from the ministry are already on-site to evaluate the dam’s condition and recommend immediate action to improve its capacity.
“We are fully committed to overhauling this critical infrastructure. The upgrade of the Alau Dam is non-negotiable, and any delays or substandard work by contractors or officials will result in penalties,” Utsev stated.
He also emphasized efforts to control the spread of waterborne diseases, in collaboration with the state government. As part of the ministry’s intervention, sanitation kits and water treatment facilities will be provided to displaced persons.
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, expressed gratitude for the swift response and support from the ministers. He stressed the need for a detailed assessment of the dam’s capacity, the establishment of hydraulic structures, and improved flood forecasting systems. Zulum also highlighted the importance of addressing desertification and investing in clean energy and irrigation to combat the effects of climate change.
