In response to the recent increase in Nigeria’s national minimum wage, the Federal Government has inaugurated the Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries for civil servants. The inauguration, held on Friday in Abuja, was facilitated through the office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack.

This move comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Minimum Wage Act of 2024 into law, raising the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. The committee’s mandate is to negotiate and agree on consequential salary adjustments for civil servants, ensuring the effective implementation of the new wage law.

Comprising 16 members, the committee includes representatives from the Federal Government and Trade Unions and is chaired by Walson-Jack herself. The group will also develop a template for implementing the newly approved minimum wage across various sectors.

In her opening remarks, Walson-Jack highlighted the critical importance of the committee’s work in ensuring industrial peace and harmony within the public sector. She expressed confidence that the committee would carry out its task in the best interest of the public service and the nation at large.

“We must recognise the significance of this assignment, and with a focus on maintaining industrial peace and harmony, I am confident that we will execute it in the best interests of the public service and the nation as a whole,” Walson-Jack said during the inauguration.

The Head of Civil Service also emphasized that the inauguration of this committee aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to lift Nigerians out of poverty and create a conducive environment for economic growth.

The committee consists of members from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and various Trade Unions. With the formation of this committee, the Federal Government is taking decisive steps toward enhancing the welfare of Nigerian workers and improving public sector productivity.
