South African Airways (SAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the next generation of aviation professionals by hosting the Aviation Youth Forum, an initiative designed to inspire young people to pursue careers across the aviation value chain.

The forum brought together aspiring aviators, industry experts, educators, and government representatives to explore opportunities within the sector including piloting, aircraft engineering, air traffic control, travel management, and cabin operations. The event formed part of SAA’s broader Youth Development Programme, which focuses on skills training, mentorship, and career guidance for young South Africans.

Speaking at the event, SAA representatives emphasized the airline’s goal of empowering youth from disadvantaged communities through exposure to aviation pathways. “Our mission is not only to fly passengers across the world but also to uplift the next generation of African aviation leaders,” said an SAA official.

The forum featured interactive workshops, mentorship sessions, and career exhibitions led by pilots, flight attendants, and technical experts. Learners were given insights into SAA’s Cadet Pilot Development Programme, Technical Apprenticeships, and Graduate Internship Opportunities, which have been instrumental in creating skilled aviation professionals for decades.

SAA’s initiative aligns with wider government efforts to promote youth empowerment and STEM education. Partnerships with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and other stakeholders are helping to strengthen the local talent pipeline and ensure the aviation sector remains competitive and inclusive.

Beyond South Africa, SAA has also participated in youth-focused aviation events in Nigeria, including the “Aviation Career Day” in Lagos, aimed at inspiring African students to consider aviation as a viable and exciting career path.

As the airline continues to rebuild and expand its network, SAA’s commitment to youth empowerment underscores its role not only as South Africa’s flag carrier but also as a catalyst for continental growth and innovation in aviation.
