VP Shettima Reaffirms Federal Government’s Support for Traditional Rulers, Pays Homage to Oba of Benin

Benin City, Nigeria – Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the federal government’s steadfast support for Nigeria’s traditional institutions, recognizing their crucial role in fostering peace, preserving culture, and contributing to nation-building. Shettima made this commitment during a visit to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, at his palace in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Saturday.

The Vice President was in Benin to participate in the grand finale of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial campaign ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for next Saturday. While paying homage to the revered monarch, Shettima emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in maintaining societal harmony and upholding cultural values.

“I am assuring you of the federal government’s unwavering support for traditional institutions like yours,” Shettima stated. “Our administration recognizes the crucial role that traditional rulers play as custodians of our cultural heritage and as key stakeholders in national development.”

He praised traditional rulers for their significant roles in conflict resolution and in promoting peace and unity. “Your role in fostering peace, unity, and progress in our great country, and particularly in guiding our youths, cannot be overemphasized,” he added.

The Vice President lauded Oba Ewuare II for his exemplary leadership and dedication to preserving the Benin Kingdom’s rich cultural legacy. He noted the monarch’s contributions to advocating for the return of stolen Benin artifacts, many of which have recently been repatriated, crediting the Oba’s diplomatic skills and wisdom.

“Your imperial majesty, you have shown remarkable leadership. You are one of the most respected rulers in this country. Your efforts in promoting Benin culture, fostering unity among your people, and advocating for the return of stolen Benin artifacts have not gone unnoticed,” Shettima said.

The Vice President also sought the Oba’s blessings for the APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebhole, ahead of the Edo State elections. He expressed confidence that the candidate, if elected, would bring progress and development to the state, building on its illustrious history.

“Our party’s candidate, Senator Monday Okpebhole, comes with a vision of progress and development for Edo State. We believe that with your support and the collective will of the Edo people, we can usher in an era of unprecedented growth and prosperity for the state,” Shettima remarked.

In his response, Oba Ewuare II thanked the Vice President for the visit and praised the federal government for recognizing the importance of traditional institutions. The monarch also requested government support for the construction of the Benin Royal Museum, a project he believes will further promote the preservation of Benin’s rich cultural heritage.

The Oba reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the traditions of the Benin Kingdom and expressed his gratitude for the Vice President’s acknowledgment of his efforts to protect and promote the kingdom’s legacy.
