Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, and other senior members of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team have withdrawn from representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in his ongoing terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Agabi, who served as lead counsel, informed the court on Thursday that Kanu had chosen to take back control of his legal representation, prompting the entire team of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to step down from the case.
Confirming the decision, Kanu told the court he would represent himself for the time being, although he left open the possibility of securing new legal counsel later. When trial judge Justice James Omotosho asked whether a court-appointed lawyer should be assigned to him, Kanu declined, asserting his intention to personally handle his defense.
In an oral submission, the IPOB leader challenged the court’s authority to hear the case, insisting that it lacked jurisdiction over the charges brought against him. Kanu is currently facing a seven-count terrorism charge filed by the Federal Government, in a case that continues to draw widespread attention both within and outside Nigeria.
