Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday initiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan to international standards. Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde highlighted the project’s significance, stating it will connect the state to the global market and enhance business opportunities in agribusiness, manufacturing, and technology.

“This airport will improve ease of doing business, bringing investments into key sectors and positioning Ibadan as a true regional business hub,” Makinde declared. The upgrade, awarded to Messrs Craneburg at a cost of N41 billion, includes enhancing the runway, airfield lighting, and terminal facilities. The governor assured that the project would be completed within the next 12 months.

Makinde also addressed concerns about the recent Presumptive Tax Law, stating it will not be implemented due to current economic hardships. “I will sign it into law, but we will not implement it for now,” he said, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to policies that benefit the people.

In addition, Makinde confirmed that adequate compensation has been provided to landowners affected by the construction of a new Air Force Base in Ajia. He praised the committee responsible for the airport upgrade and expressed gratitude to Craneburg for their competitive bid.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke commended Makinde for his vision and dedication to development. Air Commodore Victor Ajiboye, representing the National Air Defence Corps, assured that the upgraded airport would enhance Ibadan’s role as an economic hub.

The event was attended by key political figures, including Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal, Acting National Chairman of the PDP Amb. Damagum, and other notable dignitaries.
