Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator representing Abia North, has confirmed that efforts to remove Godswill Akpabio from his position as Senate President were unsuccessful. The lawmaker described the attempt as a failed internal maneuver that did not succeed due to the unity of the Senate.
Speaking on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, Kalu said,
“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen.”
Kalu explained that the move stemmed from internal disagreements but stressed that the Senate remains focused on its constitutional responsibilities, including supporting the agenda of the Tinubu administration and enacting laws to benefit Nigerians.
Political analysts note that Akpabio, a key ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a senior APC figure, was the target of this plot, highlighting underlying tensions within the ruling party. Kalu emphasized that the Senate’s leadership structure remains intact and that lawmakers are committed to maintaining unity for the nation’s stability.
The development underscores the importance of cohesion in the National Assembly at a time when the legislature plays a critical role in advancing national policies and supporting the government’s agenda.
