The Federal Government (FG) has dismissed reports claiming that it has imposed a nationwide ban on open grazing, describing such claims as misleading.

In a statement from the Ministry of Livestock Development, the government clarified that there is no immediate prohibition on traditional cattle grazing. Instead, the FG is promoting a phased transition from open grazing to formal ranching systems across the country.

According to official figures, Nigeria currently has 273 gazetted grazing reserves, covering over 4.5 million hectares. These reserves are being revitalized and equipped to provide regulated spaces for livestock operations, ensuring that pastoralists can continue their activities within a structured framework.

Earlier reports had suggested that open grazing would be rendered illegal nationwide and that violations could attract severe penalties. The FG, however, emphasized that its objective is to modernize livestock management, not criminalize traditional pastoral practices.
