Mikel Merino came to Arsenal’s rescue as the Premier League leaders fought back to claim a 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea in a high-stakes title showdown at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo was sent off in the 38th minute for a reckless challenge on Merino, catching the midfielder on the ankle.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Chelsea took the lead three minutes after the interval when Trevoh Chalobah powered in a header from Reece James’ corner.
Arsenal eventually found their breakthrough in the 59th minute, with Merino nodding home from close range after a precise Bukayo Saka cross, ensuring the visitors avoided defeat in a bruising contest between the title rivals.
The Gunners remain five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City—who defeated Newcastle on Saturday—and hold a six-point advantage over third-placed Chelsea.
Arsenal continue to look strong favourites for their first Premier League title since 2004, although Chelsea’s spirited performance hinted they could become the Gunners’ biggest challengers.
Arsenal are now unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions, winning 14, while Chelsea have extended their own unbeaten run to seven games.
