The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has postponed plans to reopen Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, despite a request from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to resume operations.
The airport, which was closed earlier this year for major upgrades, is undergoing renovations aimed at meeting international standards. The improvements include runway enhancements and terminal upgrades, part of a broader initiative by the Oyo State Government and federal authorities to boost air connectivity and stimulate regional economic growth.
FAAN had submitted a corrective action plan, stating that many of the issues identified during previous NCAA inspections had been addressed. The agency requested a limited reopening under specific operational conditions.
However, NCAA has maintained that not all safety gaps have been fully resolved, emphasizing that the airport cannot be recertified for scheduled flights until all concerns are adequately addressed.
A spokesperson for the regulator stated: “Safety remains our top priority. The airport will not be reopened until it fully meets our operational and safety standards.”
The delay continues to impact travelers and regional trade, while authorities work to ensure the upgraded facility meets international standards before welcoming flights again. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
