In a significant step towards fulfilling its commitment to ease the burden of rising transportation costs, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has delivered 64 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses each to the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and student leaders. The handover ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja, marking a milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to implement palliative measures.
The initiative is part of the administration’s broader strategy to address the concerns of the labour unions following the removal of fuel subsidies earlier this year. CNG buses, known for their affordability and environmental benefits, are expected to provide a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to petroleum-based transport for workers and students.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians through pragmatic solutions. “These buses are a testament to our promise to alleviate the economic pressures on the average Nigerian, especially in the face of rising fuel prices. We remain committed to ensuring that our people have access to affordable transportation,” the President said.
Labour and student leaders expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting that it would help ease the challenges faced by workers and students in commuting daily. Festus Osifo, President of the TUC, commended the administration, saying, “This is a welcome step towards ensuring that the burden on Nigerian workers is reduced. We look forward to further collaboration with the government on similar initiatives.”
The distribution of CNG buses comes as part of a series of negotiations between the government and the labour unions, aimed at cushioning the effects of the subsidy removal while driving the nation’s energy transition. As the administration continues to roll out its palliative programs, more sectors are expected to benefit from similar interventions in the near future.
