On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu led Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, accompanied by top government officials, foreign diplomats, and dignitaries. The event, themed “Reflecting on the Past, Inspiring the Future,” was marked with patriotic displays and cultural performances, symbolizing Nigeria’s unity and heritage.

President Tinubu, joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, arrived at the Forecourt of the State House at 10:03 AM. He was received by military bagpipers and inspected the Quarter Guard before proceeding to the saluting dais, where he took the national salute as the Special Guest of Honour.

The highlight of the celebration was a presidential change of guards, followed by a display from the Nigerian Armed Forces Colour Patrol, symbolizing the nation’s military pride. Guests were also treated to a silent drill by the Guards Brigade, which impressed attendees, including cabinet ministers, presidential aides, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In a showcase of Nigeria’s cultural diversity, a combined mass band and a cultural troupe from the six geo-political zones performed, reflecting the rich traditions of the country.

The President, accompanied by the First Lady and other dignitaries, later cut the anniversary cake and released white pigeons, symbolizing peace.

Notable attendees included Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kubirat Kekere-Ekun, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, members of the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly members, and heads of security agencies.

This celebration marks President Tinubu’s second Independence Day event since assuming office in May 2023.
