President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuela will hand over a substantial quantity of oil to the United States following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces earlier this month.
According to Trump’s post on Truth Social, interim Venezuelan authorities will transfer between 30 million and 50 million barrels of sanctioned crude oil to the United States. He said the oil will be sold at market price, and the proceeds will be under US presidential control to benefit both Venezuelans and Americans.
Trump instructed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to carry out the plan immediately, with the oil expected to be loaded onto storage ships and brought directly to US unloading docks.
The announcement follows a controversial military operation on January 3, 2026, in which Maduro and his wife were captured in Caracas, an action that has drawn widespread global attention and debate.
Critics have raised questions about the legality and implications of the oil transfer, noting that under international law the United States does not have ownership rights to Venezuelan oil, even as Trump pushes forward with his plan.
