The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and address the country’s evolving security challenges.

Shaibu made the call while delivering a lecture at the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He said the changing nature of security threats demands innovative approaches and greater reliance on technology to enhance military operations.

According to the Army Chief, integrating AI, data analytics, cyber capabilities, and other advanced technologies into military operations will improve intelligence gathering, operational planning, and decision-making, enabling the Nigerian Army to respond more effectively to emerging threats.

He noted that conventional methods alone are no longer sufficient to tackle modern security challenges, stressing the need for continuous innovation and collaboration among security agencies to safeguard the nation.

Shaibu also highlighted the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda, which focuses on improving operational effectiveness, personnel development, troop welfare, and institutional reforms. He said these priorities are aimed at building a more professional, technologically driven, and combat-ready force capable of meeting current and future security demands.

The lecture formed part of activities marking the 163rd anniversary of the Nigerian Army, with participants emphasizing the importance of innovation and strategic partnerships in enhancing national security. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
